One of the many popular diets right now is the carbohydrate loathing Atkins diet. Dieters who follow Atkins’ strict, ketosis inducing plan opt for fatty meats and dairy only- leaving fruits, starchy vegetables and breads by the wayside. But what if there were a dietary supplement that allowed you to eat all the starch and carbs you wanted without them being absorbed into your system? Well folks, you’ve got a potential savior in using white bean extract for weight loss.

White bean extract is a compound that is extracted from kidney beans. Dietary supplement makers, and some double blind clinical studies, state that white bean extract can block certain receptors that produce the enzymes that break down the DNA of carbohydrates. By blocking the production of these enzymes, you prevent carbohydrates from being broken down into glucose. Without the glucose produced, there is nothing to store in your fat cells. Instead, the white bean extract forces the carbohydrates to pass out of your system and through our digestive tract without being absorbed.

A study was conducted by UCLA scientists that showed a 7 pound increase in the weight lost by group of subjects on a high carbohydrate diet who took the white bean extract over the placebo group in the study. The group that took the white bean extract had a dosage of about 1 gram of white bean extract per day over a course of 30 days. The study also noted that overall, the weight lost by the participants was all in fat. Lean muscle mass was retained in each of the subjects.

The Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine magazine wrote, in 2007, that 25 healthy but slightly overweight individuals had taken part in the above referenced study. This is a relatively small study and, unfortunately, the smaller the study the less accurate the results. This should be kept in mind before you decide that white bean extract is a miracle cure and start taking it. There have been few studies to prove (or disprove) the effectiveness of white kidney bean extract as a weight loss supplement. It also seems that there are no testimonials from people who have tried it. The Food and Drug Administration has not issued any statement as to its efficacy or safety.

Taking white bean extract can cause you blood sugar to drop drastically. It is not recommended that pregnant woman or anyone diagnosed with diabetes (type I or type II) take any dietary supplement containing white bean extract. There is some concern that the lectins in uncooked beans could be fatal or could have negative side effects, since lectins are toxic to humans (lectin is removed from the bean when cooked). Beans have varying amounts of lectin in them though, so it is not certain whether, after time and large doses, white bean extract could cause medical problems.

White kidney bean extract is available for sale in pill form by many manufacturers and as a component of many different dietary supplements. Sometimes, you may see white bean extract listed in ingredients as Phase 2. Phase 2 is a registered trademark of a blend of weight loss hers along with white bean extract. If you’ve decided that white bean extract is the right weight loss supplement to help you achieve your weight loss goals, be sure to consult with a physician before taking it. Let your doctor know about your diet and exercise plans and give him, or her, a list of the ingredients from the supplement package. It is always important to get a physician’s assessment before taking a dietary supplement.
